For location work you will need to decide how to place a microphone for the best possible recording. For professional use, a shotgun microphone with a narrow pick-up is best suited to short distance recording up to 5 metres; a lapel microphone is best for recording individual conversation; and a dynamic hand-held microphone is best for speech or singing. There are some great professional quality headphones styled and suited for recording studios. There are fewer suited for location use. Choose a location headphone for its low weight, high strength, comfort and extended frequency response.

The wireless audio transmission to a camera or recorder used by professional radio microphones allows great freedom of movement for both parties. Choose a pro wireless mic which will cover the distance you need, without breaking up, and reflect the quality of the overall production. Using a miniature lapel microphone attached to a pocket radio transmitter is commonly used, but using a "plug-in" transmitter with a shotgun microphone is rising in popularity. Microphone boom poles are made from either carbon fibre or aluminium. Carbon fibre audio boom poles are lighter and stronger, but cost more. All types are topped with a 3/8" thread; some have quick release detachable tips. Choose for compactness when folded, and length when extended. Compromise may be needed!

Microphone wind and handling noise can be effectively controlled with an excellent choice of windshield devices. Foam windshields are limited, mini screens are useful and compact, and Rycote Softie windshields are very effective. For off-camera use, the Rycote Suspension with Basket and Windjammer is best of all.
